Competent Trad Second Course is an advanced course tailored for climbers aiming to develop in traditional climbing scenarios. This program delves into the specialised skills and techniques essential for following a leader while climbing with traditional gear. Learn the intricacies of removing and managing protection, communicate effectively with the leader, and master the nuances of climbing diverse rock formations. This course serves as a critical step in honing the skills needed to confidently and safely navigate the challenges of traditional rock climbing as a competent second.

  1. Advanced Protection Management:

    • In-depth exploration of placing and removing traditional protection devices.
    • Techniques for efficiently managing gear while following a leader on trad climbs.
    • Problem-solving scenarios related to protection systems.
  2. Communication and Coordination:

    • Enhancing communication skills between the leader and the second.
    • Understanding signals and cues for smooth interaction during climbs.
    • Coordination in managing rope work, including rope management and coiling.
  3. Technical Knots and Hitches:

    • Mastery of advanced knots and hitches relevant to trad climbing.
    • Application of knots like the Munter hitch and autoblock for specific situations.
    • Tying and untying knots under various conditions.
  4. Efficient Gear Handling:

    • Advanced knowledge of specialised trad climbing gear.
    • Techniques for quick and efficient gear organisation while on the climb.
    • Simulated scenarios for gear handling under stress.
  5. Risk Assessment and Decision-Making:

    • Developing skills in assessing risks associated with trad climbing.
    • Making informed decisions about route choices, gear placements, and retreat options.
    • Scenario-based training for critical decision-making in challenging situations.

Equipment

Equipment Provided

  • Harness: A harness will be provided for you (Feel free to bring your own)
  • Helmet: Arguably the most important piece of equipment to protect the ‘oul noggin. (Feel free to bring your own)
  • All specialised rock climbing equipment: A reliable compass for precise direction. 

Personal kit (Not provided)

  • Climbing shoes/trainers: Due to hygiene reasons please bring your own shoes. If you do not own a pair of climbing shoes, a pair of trainers will work fine for your first few sessions. 
  • Appropriate Clothing: Weather-appropriate gear for outdoor practical sessions.
  • Backpack: Carrying your equipment comfortably. 15l – 35l rucksack would suffice.
  • Water and Snacks: Staying hydrated and energised.

Where

  • Mourne Mountains: Depending on time, weather and group desire we may climbing in the mountains.
