Who

Our Intermediate Navigation course is a comprehensive program that is designed to help improve your navigational skills and increase your confidence in the mountains. For those who have some experience in the mountains already but wish to take their skills to the next level.

syllabus

  1. Map Reading: Developing and improving map reading skills, navigating to micro features using pacing, timing and bearings.
  2. Compass Fundamentals: Improving compass skills, covering map-to-ground and ground-to-map bearings, triangulation, backbearing etc.
  3. Terrain Interpretation: Identifying micro terrain features and contour lines.
  4. Expedition Planning: Understanding the importance of the planning phase of minor/major expeditions.
  5. Interpreting Weather: Covering the fundamentals of weather systems including frontal systems, high/low pressure, lapse rate etc.

Equipment

Equipment Provided

  • Topographic Maps: OS 1:25,000 / OS 1:50,000 / Harvey 1:25,000 (Feel free to bring your own )
  • Compass: A reliable compass for precise direction. (Feel free to bring your own )

Personal kit (Not provided)

  • Appropriate Clothing: Weather-appropriate gear for outdoor practical sessions.
  • Backpack: Carrying your equipment comfortably. 15l – 35l rucksack would suffice.
  • Water and Snacks: Staying hydrated and energised.
  • Hiking Boots: Providing support and traction while hiking.
  • Notepad and Pencil: Taking notes.
